New faces at SMDC!
The U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA) has granted funds to SMDC dedicated to staffing for disaster recovery coordinators. Joining SMDC are Karen Sweeney and Craig Flentie. These disaster coordinators will help government officials and business leaders coordinate and facilitate long-term economic recovery efforts in the six-county SMDC region that was so heavily impacted by the spring flooding in 2011.
SMDC Executive Director Kathie Bailey said the EDA grant enables SMDC to expand its staff in order to develop a recovery strategy that incorporates a comprehensive assessment of the disaster and its impacts to the regional economy. The six county region of SMDC was all included in the Presidential Disaster Declaration issued in June 2011.
The new SMDC staffers started work July 10 and have already began meeting with Disaster Emergency Services and others to assess the impacts of the flooding and strategies for recovery. Roundup and Musselshell County was especially hard hit during the flooding last year, and suffered another blow during the 2012 fire season as fires ravaged the Bull Mountains, destroying 70+ structures.
